Boston Bruins Foundation to Present Check to GEF

The Bluefin Blowout started as a spontaneous idea to combine two of Gloucester Fisherman’s favorite past-times, fishing and having fun while fishing.

Since it’s inception nearly five years ago, Founders Drew Hale and Rob Bouley have escalated this event into a fundraising opportunity for not only the local businesses throughout Cape Ann, but for the citizens of the City of Gloucester, Massachusetts. These two individuals have been reaching out to trusted business organizations for sponsorships and the Boston Bruins Foundation to help support the costs associated with hosting this annual fishing tournament.

The Bluefin Blowout would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the Boston Bruins Foundation for their support and generous donation of Boston Bruins memorabilia to the Bluefin Blowout silent auction. Bob Sweeney’s active participation in rallying the crowd to contribute to this worthwhile cause is greatly appreciated!

We would also like to give the much-deserved recognition to the sponsors who make this event a possibility! A special thanks to Lyon Waugh Auto Group. Their dedication to the Bluefin Blowout stems not only from their continuous involvement in the City of Gloucester but also from its Managing Partner, Warren Waugh, whose passion for fishing is like many of those who participate in the tournament – borderline addictive!

Additional thanks to WEEI and WAAF radio stations whose continued exposure and promotion of the event helped contribute to this year’s success!

Finally, a well-earned shoutout to the Captains and their crew! If not for their participation in the tournament – there would be not tournament. Our participants really stepped up this year and helped the Boston Bruins Foundation raise $8000.00 for the Gloucester Education Foundation.

IN THE BEGINNING

In 1959, the Cape Ann Tuna Club was born. They were an odd mix of old-timers with more stories than time to tell them, charter boat captains from up and down the east coast, sport fishermen and women, and deckhands working towards their first boat. If you fished as hard as you partied, you were in. The love of the coastal lifestyle united them and now they wish to share their pride with Anglers from all over the world!

A LEGENDARY GATHERING

Through the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s The Cape Ann Tuna Club attracted legendary boats and captains from Gloucester and the East Coast. It was no country club, just a way to get together and share in the love of the water, chase fish, tell stories, and wash it all down with a few drinks. Gloucester and the fishery has taken some hits over the years and at a certain point, the Club went to dry dock.

REFORMING

We’re back. The energy is back. We’re still that same mix of fishy old timers and rowdy newcomers dedicated to living our lives on the coast. The bars are full, beaches are hopping, the docks are busy, the boats are fueled up, and the fishing is good. Today Cape Ann Tuna Club stands for every coastal dweller, whether you’ve been here for generations or you’re getting your first taste of the lifestyle.
